10 Ways to Honor our Retired Service Women & Men on Veterans Day

November 11 is the day we honor those who have dedicated their lives to protecting our freedom and democracy. So, this Friday, on your way to the office, out to lunch, or while running errands, take a moment to look around you. There will likely be service men and women who certainly deserve a little gratitude for their sacrifices and for those sacrifices their families have made.

We’re going to make sure to spread our appreciation for our servicepersons on Veteran’s Day. Here are 9 easy ways you can honor a veteran, too:

Thank You Veterans

1. Pick up the tab. If you’re out for lunch or dinner and spot a veteran, pick up their tab. Anonymous or not, paying for a meal is a great way to say you’re grateful for all you’ve given.

2. #Post about it. A positive post appreciating our country’s servicepersons can go a long way. Take a moment to post something even as simple as this: Thank you to our active and retired service men and women for defending our freedom. We appreciate you. #VeteransDay #ThankYouVeterans

3. Wear red, white and blue. The simple gesture of wearing patriotic colors can pay tribute. It’ll also create conversation among peers and give you an opportunity to remind everyone that it’s Veterans Day.

4. Say thanks. This one costs nothing! Tap a person in uniform on the shoulder and say, “Thank you for your service.” Just like that, your good deed is done for the day. Better yet, you may have made someone’s day.

5. Lend a hand. Does a veteran live near you, attend your church or shop your same grocery store? Ask them how you can lend a hand; a round-trip ride somewhere, offer your home repair skills, or even a quick raking of the leaves. This one will mean something even if they decline.

6. Hold the phone. Errr door. Hang back a moment to hold a door for a veteran—or really anyone for that matter. Because, why not?

7. Spread love in a group home. There’s most likely a retirement home nearby, and most homes are open (and grateful!) for visitors. Grab a buddy, your kiddo, or your dog (call to make sure animals are ok first!) and some fresh cookies, and spend an hour mingling with the residents. The staff can help you laser in on the veterans.

8. Fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-lah. Did you know that you can adopt a military family for the holidays? Gifts, meals and surprises welcome.

9. Connect loved ones. Do you have frequent flier miles and no planned trips? Hero Miles makes it easy to donate your unused miles, and you score tax deductions. Your favorite vets are now free to move about the country.

These are just a few of so many ways to say thank you to those who have defended our country and protected our freedom. We hope that this November 11th, you’ll join us and do something to honor a veteran. They deserve it!
